Marilyn Monroe's was first established in 1982 as a pizza place called Pizza Milano. Pizza Milano quickly became a favorite of foreigners, since it was the only place to buy pizza. During its transformation from a pizza place to a bar/restaurant, Marilyn Monroe has to its credit of being the first pizza place, first beer joint, first official pub, the first place darts boards were put up in Ankara.

During the early 1990s, the many faces of the foreigners patronizing Pizza Milano were that of the young soldiers from Ankara's Balgat military base, stationed here to fight in the First Gulf War. These young soldiers started to bring Marilyn Monroe posters to be hung on the walls of Pizza Milano.
